Week 28 and 29, Monday July 7th to Monday July 21st
I missed writing last week. Now
its two weeks together, bear with me.
The highlight of the week was my
favorite ‘monkey tail cactus’ flowering!!!. Many of the cacti from my
collection were blooming since last one month. It was my routine to check each
of them and pollinate. Of all the cacti I have, monkey tail is such a charming one,
it instantly becomes the favourite of all those who visit our farm. This is one
of those plants I had brought back from my trip to Kalimpong, Darjeeling in
2023. I remember buying a new trolley, loading it with only plants and dragging
it across airport. Many of those died, except a few cacti. This one was only an
inch when I potted, now has grown longer and longer, and it even bloomed this
year!!! A red bud emerged, and I thought it will open the next day. That next
day came after a week. It was exciting. There are three more buds, but I won’t
be able to see them blooming as I am going to my parents.
Me and Dhruva came to my parents to stay for a week (I am writing from here). Cultift is missing me, Duo is angry. I have halted them. It’s a vacation obvio. I am here to gossip with amma. Do nothing and just sleep whenever Dhruva sleeps. And that’s what I did. Except I had to write the article for my Shramajeevi column. As always appa spoiled me with biscuits & snacks; amma with her homemade foods.
We together attended a very
special family gathering on the weekend - ‘Dose Kambala’. This Kambala is
different from the buffalo mud racing. But with the same intention - uniting
relatives and friends from surrounding places for a fun filled time – with Dosa
as the cause. We lost count on how much
we ate over chatting and gossiping. Dhruva also came with us; he was crying at
the beginning. He identifies strangers now, cries if he doesn’t find them
pleasing, like their looks(!), and tone. He got adjusted over time. Kambalas
which make the community stronger, once common are becoming rare now.
Kabbe = Ajja and his flashbacks.
Samartha (my cousin) wanted to get stitched two uniform pants, each of Rs.700.
He was asking money from kaka. “When I was of your age, I had only two Kakhi
shorts. After my 10th, In the year 1953, I joined the Krishi college
(which used to offer short term diploma courses on horticulture under
Indo-Japan collaboration). They gave 20rs every month as stipend. From the
first stipend after spending on food and rent, I saved Rs.6, got a pant
stitched. Such was the situation. Your generation doesn’t seem to know the
value of money” Ajja was there and started. He will be 88 this September, very
active, very witty, I enjoy listening to his stories.
My phone knows that I am eating a
lot of junk now a days. My insta is flooding with ads of the same. One of the
ads was that of ‘Nova Nova’. Biscuit cone filled with chocolate syrup. Basically,
what you find at the end of an icecream cone. I got tempted to buy, but after
Sweet Karam Coffee I am hesitant about ordering eatables online. I was not
hoping to get it anywhere here in small place like Sirsi. But there it was, in Jiomart.
I like GoneMad, this was similar, but pricier.
Anyone who like stationeries here!?. I have seen most of the girls do; Including me. Whenever I visit a shopping mall the first thing I search is for the stationary section. It is such a joy to see and buy colored pens, markers, sketch books, notebooks, paints. 'Nibha' is our neighbor, who just moved back from USA, she is studying 5th. She said school children at USA get a lot of stationary items as gifts for achieving small small milestones at school. She gave me a pen, which she had received from her teacher on completing a book reading. So cool!
Nibha gave this cute penI wore saree for the class. Everyone
was wowing. I like wearing saree. It looks good on me. I am comfortable too.
But it takes time to drape, so I prefer dresses. After Dhruva is born, I am wearing
kurtas with zippers that are comfortable for breast feeding. Since I don’t go
out regularly I have only two such. I thought, why spend more on clothes for
just the sake of two years. Now I am bored of wearing the same again and again.
I have many pants, shirts and tops, from college, but I don’t wear them
outside, Sirsi is not the place, I feel awkward with people staring at me.
I read two books. First was ಹೊಕ್ಕಳ ಮೆದುಳು, sci-fi by my favorite writer Dr.K.N. Ganeshaih. Second was the ಕೇರಳ ಮಾಂತ್ರಿಕರ ನಿಗೂಢ ಕಥೆಗಳು, which is the compilation of black magic stories from Kerala. Yakshis, Chattans, Namboodaris, it was fun reading.
I had come across a reel recommending top 5 short Kannada movies on Insta recently. I watched all of them, each of roughly 20 minutes. I didn’t like any, I don’t recommend you to watch.
Also, I watched a Bhutanese movie, “Lunana : A yak in the classroom”, about a teacher who is posted to teach at the remotest village of Bhutan. A slow-paced movie that runs with the beautiful landscapes of the Bhutan in the background has a story that leaves your heart full. I highly highly recommend you to watch. The movie has made my temptation to visit Bhutan grow stronger. I would have visited Bhutan but many recommended Sikkim over Bhutan, after visiting Sikkim I feel they were true, but Bhutan is Bhutan, I hope to go there sometime.
I got fabric scraps from my chikkamma, to try some new sewing projects. I have cut the pieces and kept. Let’s see what I stitch next week.
