Week 22 of 2025, Sunday to Saturday, May 25 to May 31

The week went in the blink of an eye. We had our annual Dēva kārya on 27th. First two days went in  preparing😥, next two days in relaxing!😴 Every year during the last week of May or first week of June comes this ritual of doing Gaṇa hōma and Satyanārāyaṇa kathe at our home. From kitchen to cow shed, from cupboard to fridge this is the time we deep clean our house. Close relatives, 60 to 70, attended.

I put this Kolam for Dēva kārya. I like putting rangolis, But I don’t have that creativity to put free styles. I follow pinterest posts.

The best of the best Chikki’s made by my chikkamma - Suchi. She has a home business of making this. We had ordered 250, to give it to all the relatives and friends. She makes delicious food. Her insta handle is plates_of_joy_78. Follow for quick veg recipes.

My relaxations has lead to binge eating. I shouldn’t be doing that; I tell you why. Somewhere in summers of 2023, I started to suffer from lower back pain. I couldn’t bend, sit, or sleep peacefully. I showed it to many doctors here in Sirsi. First doctor I met gave painkillers that didn’t work. Next doctor I met said it is the pain in the disc, running down to legs (condition is called sciatica). He gave medicine for a month, that treats nerve pain. I didn’t recover. Next doctor I met said its because of acidity, I took antacid for a month. No help. Everyone was suggesting to try Ayurveda. Next ayurvedic doctor I met said this is Vāta I had a gas bubble moving in the back (Very funny, but that is what it is in ayurveda), I shouldn’t eat spicy foods and gaseous vegetables like potato sweet potato cauliflower chilly etc. Pain persisted. I next went to a Homeopathic doctor, he confirmed it’s indeed the L4 L5 lumbar disc pain. I felt ok with his medicine. Pain was manageable, But I didn’t recover fully. I also had physiotherapy with no positive results. That was a trial and error of 4-5 months, too much pain with no recovery was  disturbing me mentally. By the time,,, I had met many of my age, with same problem. Finally I got the best of all recommendations, to meet Dr.Kiran Kulkarni, ‘Sports medicine Specialist’ at Dharwad. He explained that it’s a lifestyle disease, can only be cured with plenty of rest, certain changes in how we walk sit and work. Touch wood, because of his treatment, pain is just 10-20 % of what it used to be earlier. It is recurrent when I work heavily.

Story doesn’t end here. This was also the time doctor suggested me to reduce weight. I am never a work out person. Instead, I started dieting with Healthify me. I took a 6-month plan, reduced from 63kg to 54. Now even post pregnancy I am 55. Healthify me was the besttttttt thing happened. I loved what my coach did. No deletions in the daily food, only portion control, adding on proteins. I had to cut down sugar, only extra sugar, after taking in good number of proteins I felt full most of the time, with no cravings for junk and sweets. I was practising good food. Till now. Its been a month that I am losing this habit. I shouldn’t be doing that. Gaining weight is like inviting pain.

I wrote this because,, most of you, of my age can relate.

Back to what happened this week.

Finally! Our bee day🐝

I designed a visitng vard for me on Canva, I ordered 100 of them on vista print. I wrote an article on ‘Cryptanthus’ plants for my column on ornamental plants in Sudha weekly. Sunny days are back. I go to farm and nursery, daily. Leeches have not appeared but mosquitoes are swarming, too many of them this year. Putting a layer of odomos is not enough, I carry coconut husk burning with smoke, to repel them, otherwise can’t stay there even for a second.

Farm Fresh Guavas and coorg Mandarins🍊

My succulents at the polyhouse were losing their charm. I decided to go for bottom watering – putting the pots directly in 2 inches of standing water. Water raises through drainage holes, soil gets soaked, roots absorbs moisture efficiently. I did this for the first time. I was very afraid, as it might cause water retention and root rot in succulents which are very sensitive to watering. But looks like the idea worked out. They look better now, hydrated.

Cacti and succulents from my collection

Next week I am approaching few people to propose my weekend horti class. I am thinking to attend Jack fruit fair as well. (Suchi chikkamma is putting up a 'masala papad' and jack fruit cake stall😋)
